Case Study

Donna is a manager who came to Jennifer looking for coaching on how to handle a situation involving her staff. She observed an escalation of tensions between two staff members over the last two months. Recently, one of the staff members lost his temper at a team meeting and stormed out of the boardroom making the conflict apparent to their work unit. Donna wondered what she could do as a manager in this situation, and what her responsibilities were for resolving this situation.

In 6 coaching sessions, Jennifer helped Donna establish clear options for action in this situation. First, they explored her roles and responsibilities as a manager with regards to code of conduct and policy on workplace violence. Second, they worked on her techniques for defusing aggression and assertive communication. With this, they explored her triggers, needs and concerns when managing a situation of heightened tension with her staff. Finally, they set up support structures for her to feel confident in her actions while under pressure.

Donna was able to apply the techniques and insights gained from conflict coaching to her conversations with the two members of her staff in conflict. She effectively diffused the tensions and knew when to use the support structures we identified as she too action. By addressing the issue with her staff members directly and expeditiously, she was able to bolster the cohesion and respect of her work unit.
